1951 - 2019

A memorial service for Larry K. Shetler, 67, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, will be held Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019, at 2 p.m., at the United Christian and Baptist Church in Kalona with Pastor Floyd Yutzy officiating.   Burial of his cremains will follow at the Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona.  Larry Shetler died May 22, 2019, in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Larry K. Shetler was born Sept. 13, 1951, in Iowa, the son of Richard G. and Ruth N. (Kuhlman) Shetler.  He graduated from Western Illinois University with a bachelor’s in elementary education and music education. He entered the Peace Corps in 1976 and from there Larry taught at schools in Brazil for 40 years.

His interests were in music, theatre, model railroading and as of late, quilting. He was an avid traveler and had visited as many as 36 different countries. Larry was always interested in the family history and the connections to Kalona, Iowa, visiting Kalona in the summers that he returned to the states.

Survivors include two siblings: Dean C. (Belinda) Schoettler of Trego, Mont., and Phyllis Shetler (Juergen) Butt of Carol Stream, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Larry in death were his parents and three brothers: Robert B., Kenneth D. and Richard L. Shetler.
